Description
It used to be thought that Pelicans inverted their spines through their beaks to cool off but more recently it is believed that they are yawning. Yawning is something all birds do however, pelicans can do it much longer because they are larger birds and can afford to take their time. It is called glottis exposure. This is a Brown Pelican that still has some breeding colors.
